Answer:
There are many commercial membrane systems available, with > 5 companies making reverse osmosis membranes for water treatment (Dow Filmtec, Hydranautics, Toray, Koch, CSM, Toyobo, GE Osmonics etc) and a comparable number of companies making MF/UF systems (Siemens, Dow, GE, Pall, Toray, Norit, Hydranautics, etc). Companies such as Sartorius and Diacon etc provide membranes for the pharmaceuticals industry and other industrial processes. There are also many new companies starting up in China and India, and many niche membrane manufacturers. To some degree, membranes are a commodity product.
